Howald and Bruce K. Orr. Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves (VESR) consist of two separate reserves, Valentine Camp and the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), located approximately eight miles apart.
They are situated in Mono County on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, near. Every year, thousands of students and adults visit SNARL and its sister reserve, Valentine Camp, to participate in programs that support school curricula, as well as public walks, talks and lecture series featuring current research in the region.
Origins. During the s the eastern Sierras became a popular respite for Los Angelinos. “We are deeply grateful to the Tambour Foundation, and to Roger and Ruth MacFarlane for their advocacy for the Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves and this visionary and generous gift.” The Valentine Reserves includes acre Valentine Camp, right in the city of Mammoth Lakes, and the nearby, acre Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory.
SNARL lies immediately at the base of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, along the borderline that separates the montane environment of the Sierra from the arid Great Basin Desert to the east.
The flora of SNARL includes species characteristic of mesic mountain habitats as well as xeric desert sites. Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve: Valentine Camp is a center for research in the high Sierra Nevada and the upper Owens Valley.
The reserve lies in a glacier-carved basin in a transition zone between the sagebrush desert of the Great Basin and the coniferous forests of the high Sierra Nevada.
With its varied topography and soils, the site encompasses several distinct habitats. The Valentine Camp is a research center located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The camp is part of the University of California’s natural reserve system, a network of protected natural areas located throughout California. The network includes 36 sites that encompass approximatelyacres.
